Methods of describing IS are needed to corroborate the CK and CK-MB methods. Thallium-20 1 myocardial perfusion scintigraphy could be a valid means of measuring IS. 12-14 However, attempts to estimate the size of the perfusion defect by a standard gamma camera technique have been hampered by the constraints of two-dimensional imaging. Tomographic imaging techniques overcome the geometric limitations of the planar scintigraphic methods. Keyes et al.32 demonstrated that IS can be measured in vivo by ECT with technetium-99m pyrophosphate in experimental myocardial infarction. They also showed the feasibility of calculating viable and infarcted myocardial mass from 201T1 ECT in an isolated heart model.33 Vogel et al.34 reported a higher sensitivity using 201T1 exercise test with seven-pinhole tomographic imaging compared with planar imaging. However, limited-angle tomography such as the seven-pinhole method has been reported to have severe quantitative limitations that create several distortions because of its physical properties.3 We have applied ECT with a rotating gamma camera 3600 data collection ; to 207T1 myocardial imaging. This technique increased the accuracy of detecting myocardial infarction compared with planar and seven-pinhole tomographic techniques, and also showed improved quantitative capability.2' We were interested in testing the infarct-sizing capability in man of our ECT 360 tomography ; , which used a 201T1 tracer. In the present study, visualization of the myocardium by ECT with a rotating gamma camera and 201TI.
CLINICAL TRIALS The safety and efficacy of BARACLUDE were evaluated in three pivotal active-controlled trials on five continents. These studies included 1633 patients 16 years of age or older with chronic hepatitis B infection serum HBsAg-positive for at least 6 months ; accompanied by evidence of viral replication detectable serum HBV DNA, as measured by the bDNA hybridization or PCR assay ; . Subjects had persistently elevated ALT levels 1.3 times the upper limit of normal ULN ; and chronic inflammation on liver biopsy compatible with a diagnosis of chronic viral hepatitis. The safety and efficacy of BARACLUDE were also evaluated in a study of 68 patients co-infected with HBV and HIV.
For cultured canine RPE and human RPE ARPE-19 ; as well as freshly obtained canine RPE Fig. 4B ; . The fact that freshly obtained canine RPE and cultured canine RPE both contained VGLUT1 protein indicates that the presence of this vesicular protein in cultured canine RPE is not an artifact of culture conditions. These results support the hypothesis that at least some of the glutamate released by RPE and LEC is regulated by mechanisms similar to those occurring in neuronal cells. To study potential pathways for reuptake of secreted glutamate, a specific glutamate transporter inhibitor, PDC 6 ; , was used in the presence or absence of FAC. RPE were incubated for 24 h with the indicated treatments. As shown earlier in Fig. 2, A and B, FAC significantly increased glutamate accumulation in the CCM. Treatment with PDC also increased the accumulation of glutamate in the CCM and significantly enhanced FAC-induced glutamate accumulation Fig. 3C ; . Another inhibitor of glutamate transporters, cis-1-aminocyclobutane-1, 3-dicarboxylic acid 35 ; , also increased glutamate accumulation in the CCM from 17 0.7 to 42 2.5 M at 24 h; 0.004, paired t-test ; . The increased accumulation of glutamate in the CCM in the presence of either inhibitor indicates that RPE cells can recycle the glutamate that they secrete. However, the data suggest that the recycling is not completely efficient, because glutamate continues to accumulate in the CCM over time, and this accumulation is further enhanced by iron. Glutamate secretion by RPE and LEC could have both autocrine and paracrine functions. When added to preparations of RPE and retina, glutamate stimulated reattachment of photoreceptors to RPE and increased shedding and phagocytosis of photoreceptor discs 12, 19 ; . Glutamate can also increase RPE proliferation 58 ; . Glutamatergic systems have recently been found in other nonneuronal tissues, including pinealocytes 50 ; , islets of Langerhans 25 ; , stomach, intestine, and testis 25 ; . The present study provides evidence for the presence of this system in two ocular epithelial cell types: RPE cells and LEC. Therefore, regulation of glutamate metabolism by iron may represent a universal phenomenon of primary importance to cells of diverse origin. The roles played by glutamate in the physiology and pathology of these tissues need further study. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that iron-induced changes in aconitase activity parallel changes in glutamate production and accumulation in the CCM. Interestingly, iron-deficient anemic rats have significantly lower serum glutamate and impaired behavioral function 33 ; . There are other potential links between iron metabolism and glutamate secretion in pathological situations. For example, iron derived from heme deposited during hemorrhage in the brain and in the retina could also affect the activity of this pathway and increase glutamate secretion. The present results obtained with hemin indicate that there could be long-term effects on glutamate production, which would be dependent on the relatively slow release of iron from heme. In other studies, ischemia-reperfusion injury altered both iron availability 4 ; and glutamate secretion 55 ; . In the retina, an imbalance in iron homeostasis has been associated with degeneration of this tissue 20, 61 ; . There are numerous neurodegenerative conditions in which iron 62 ; and glutamate metabolism, storage, and secretion are dysregulated. For example, the concentration of iron in the.

New Democratization in Southeast Asia William Case Griffith University, Australia Analysts make much of the diversity of Southeast Asia's political regimes, encompassing some post-totalitarian holdovers, an absolute sultanate, a military government in Myanmar, and some UN-driven electoralism. However, Southeast Asia also displays a mounting preponderance of pseudo- and fuller democracies, as well as a common mode of transition where fuller democratization has taken place. In addition, these two regime types and the mode of change between them characterize the region's most developed countries, namely, the city-state of Singapore and the so-called ASEAN 4--Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Hence, Southeast Asia's political development may be geared after all to some staggered, though baseline dynamic. This paper, then, in probing for a distinct causal pattern, begins by arguing that these "intermediate" regime categories, poised on the divide between hard authoritarianism and consolidated democracy, can be partly ascribed to common, though countervailing factors of colonial legacies, structural forces, some faint cultural residues, and new globalized influences. Next, this paper explores the conditions in which changes may take place from pseudodemocracy to more fully democratic outcomes, spotlighting the region's distinctive mode of "bottom-up" or opposition-led transition-by-replacement. Here, the role of national leadership--suffering an abrupt loss of paramountcy and managerial capacity, thereby triggering divisions between elites--grows crucial. Analysis turns finally to the ways in which despite this weakening of leadership, elites regain enough vitality that while transitions may go forward, they have been able to collaborate in limiting the quality of the new democracies that have emerged. Though civil liberties are more freely exercised and political executives can be electorally changed, entrenched elites obstruct or elude many of the deeper procedural reforms and policy outcomes that might threaten their most vital interests. In consequence, while transitions from pseudo- to fuller democracy in Southeast Asia must be adjudged as meaningful, many unreformed political practices and patterns of government-business relations persist, greatly impinging on governance. PanCAN is pleased to announce that it has received the single largest gift in its history, 0, 000 from the Blum Kovler Foundation. The Foundation's extraordinary gesture will bolster the twin pillars of PanCAN's mission--our public policy effort to secure increased federal funding for pancreatic cancer research and our private program to nurture new science. Publicly and privately funded research are both crucial to the quest for a cure. This gift will help PanCAN increase its impact in both areas. PanCAN will recognize the Foundation's singular act of generosity by creating the Blum Kovler Foundation New Opportunities Initiative. The Initiative will provide a permanent rubric for PanCAN's most innovative projects and programs. The ability to respond quickly to new challenges is a hallmark of our philosophy. The Blum Kovler Initiative will showcase our work at its most dynamic. Like so many PanCAN supporters, the Foundation's reasons for giving are rooted in a family's personal experience with pancreatic cancer. Marjorie Blum Kovler died of the disease in 1970 and it is her two sons, Jonathan and Peter, who are directors of the Foundation. Back then, little attention was paid to pancreatic cancer; information about it was hard to come by and patients largely had to fend for themselves. The Kovler family has been stalwart in helping PanCAN tear down this wall of silence. PanCAN was born of a faith in the power of people working together for the improvement of all. We are proud to uphold this ideal and grateful to have the support of such a devoted benefactor as we pursue our vision of a world without pancreatic cancer.

J. A. Ferguson and J. D. Miller. Applications Laboratory, Applied Biosystems, Framingham, MA. Sponsor: M. Lawton. Steroids and their metabolites can be positively identified and quantified in biological matrices using the tools of tandem mass spectrometry. Tandem mass spectrometers such as triple quadru-poles, hybrid linear ion traps incorporating triple quadrupoles and ion traps in one instrument ; and QqTOF instruments quadrupole time-of-flight hybrids ; can be operated in multiple modes to provide information about the structure of the molecule, how much of it is the sample, and to confirm the identity of the analytes in a multi-component analysis. We will show product ion spectra of several steroids and relate the spectra to their structures. We can also use the product ions common to multiple steroids as precursors to find other steroids such as designer steroids ; or metabolites of known steroids. The neutral losses common to mul-tiple steroids can also be used for the same purpose. Using information-dependant acquisition IDA ; , we can quantify and confirm the identity of the suspected analyte using a library-searchable product ion scan in a sample in real time during one LC injection.
